Context & Use

This page documents a preserved small-emblem variant of the Dienstflagge für Schiffe und Boote der Volksmarine, the naval service flag of the East German Volksmarine.

The general layout follows the standard DDR naval service flag design: a red field with a central black-red-gold horizontal stripe and the state emblem placed in the centre. In overall concept, the flag therefore belongs to the same visual family as the regulation-compliant large-emblem type documented separately as FG-057.

The proportions of the Volksmarine service flag were legally defined in the 1960 regulation on naval service flags and later clarified in Gesetzblatt Sonderdruck 751 (1973). These regulations establish the geometric relationship between flag ratio, central stripe and emblem. A detailed examination of these regulations and their interpretation is presented in the documentation of the regulation-compliant variant FG-057.

The present example differs significantly from this specification. Its emblem, measuring approximately 20 cm on a flag height of 50 cm, is substantially smaller than the regulation proportion would require.

Available documentation — including research inquiries addressed to the German military history research centre (ZMSBw) — indicates that no explicit normative basis for a reduced-emblem variant has currently been identified. The difference therefore appears to originate not from a separate regulation but from variations in the manufacturing or assembly process of the flags.

Smaller flag formats were likely used alongside the large stern flags of naval vessels, for example as harbour flags, signal flags or bow flags. In such cases the emblem elements appear to have been produced separately and sewn onto the finished flag, which could lead to variations in the final proportions.

Technical observations

The examined flag measures approximately 50 × 85 cm, corresponding closely to a 3:5 ratio typical for DDR state and service flags.

The body is made from lightweight synthetic flag cloth. The fabric has the smooth, slightly glossy appearance typical of later institutional synthetic production rather than woven cotton bunting.

The flag is assembled from multiple horizontal panels. The black, red and gold elements of the central band are formed by separate strips of fabric joined with machine stitching, rather than being printed onto a single red field.

The state emblem is not printed directly onto the flag body. Instead, it appears on a separately printed circular patch, which has then been stitched onto the centre of the flag. The emblem patch measures approximately 20 cm in diameter.

The full central tricolour band measures approximately 20 cm in total height. On a 50 cm high flag, this gives the band a proportion of about two fifths of the overall height, which differs from the one-third relationship defined in the known regulation texts.

The print itself shows the expected DDR state symbol — hammer and compass within a wreath — rendered in yellow pigment with black outlines. The line work is crisp and utilitarian rather than decorative, and is consistent with flag production intended for official or semi-official use.

The hoist construction consists of a heavy cotton sleeve with multiple machine-stitched reinforcement lines. A braided cotton halyard terminates in triangular metal snap hooks used for hoisting the flag, a common hardware configuration on institutional DDR flags.

Additional reinforcement is visible at the fly end corners, where triangular stitched patches strengthen the outer edges against strain.

Taken together, the sewing structure, reinforced hoist sleeve, cotton halyard and utilitarian metal fittings are consistent with institutional manufacture. At the same time, the reduced emblem size and altered stripe proportion distinguish this example clearly from the regulation-based large-emblem type.

Comparison with regulation variant (FG-057)

While the overall layout of FG-058 corresponds to the standard Volksmarine service flag design, the proportions differ noticeably from the regulation-compliant example documented as FG-057.

The most visible difference concerns the size of the state emblem. On FG-058 the emblem measures approximately 20 cm in diameter on a flag height of about 50 cm.

By comparison, the regulation-scale example documented as FG-057 measures approximately 67 cm in height and carries a central emblem measuring about 46 cm in diameter.

FG-058 emblem measurement
FG-058: emblem diameter approx. 20 cm on a flag height of 50 cm.
FG-057 emblem measurement
FG-057: regulation-scale emblem measuring approx. 46 cm on a flag height of 67 cm.

Although the two flags are relatively similar in overall size, the difference in emblem scale is immediately visible. The smaller flag (FG-058) carries a significantly reduced emblem, whereas the larger regulation example retains the dominant emblem geometry defined in the official Volksmarine flag specifications.

A similar discrepancy appears in the central black-red-gold stripe. Instead of the expected one-third proportion, the stripe on FG-058 measures roughly 20 cm, occupying a noticeably larger portion of the flag height.

The combined effect of these changes produces a distinctly different visual balance compared to the regulation geometry seen on FG-057.

Possible explanations

At present no primary source has been identified that formally defines a reduced-emblem version of the Volksmarine service flag. The currently available regulations consistently describe the emblem as occupying approximately two thirds of the flag height.

A research inquiry addressed to the German military history research centre Zentrum für Militärgeschichte und Sozialwissenschaften der Bundeswehr (ZMSBw) confirmed that the known DDR regulations of 1960 and 1973 define the large-emblem geometry, while no explicit normative basis for a smaller emblem variant has so far been identified in the available literature.

The response further suggested that differences in emblem size may be related to the manufacturing and assembly process of the flags. In particular, emblem elements appear to have been produced separately and then sewn onto the finished flag bodies during the final stages of production.

If emblem patches were manufactured in standardized sizes, smaller flag formats could therefore end up with undersized emblems when the available patches did not match the ideal regulation proportions.

Smaller service flags were also used alongside the large stern flags of naval vessels, including harbour flags, bow flags or other operational display flags used on smaller craft. Such formats may have required practical adjustments during production.

As noted in the ZMSBw correspondence, this interpretation remains a plausible hypothesis rather than a documented regulation. Further archival research — particularly into production records of DDR flag manufacturers such as VEB Technische Textilien Meerane — may clarify the exact origin of these proportional variations.

An inquiry regarding these manufacturing processes has therefore been submitted to the Sächsisches Staatsarchiv, where records related to the Meerane textile combine are preserved.

Conclusion

FG-058 represents a preserved example of a small-emblem variant of the Volksmarine service flag of the German Democratic Republic.

While the overall design clearly corresponds to the standard naval service flag layout, the measured proportions differ significantly from the geometry defined in the official DDR regulations of 1960 and 1973.

On a flag height of approximately 50 cm, the regulation design would require an emblem diameter of about 33 cm. The present example instead carries an emblem measuring only about 20 cm, indicating a substantial reduction relative to the prescribed standard.

Despite this difference, the flag displays multiple characteristics typical of institutional DDR manufacture, including synthetic flag cloth, multi-panel construction, a reinforced cotton hoist sleeve and standard naval halyard fittings.

The most plausible interpretation is therefore that FG-058 represents a production variant created during the manufacturing or assembly process, rather than a separately regulated flag type.

Until additional archival documentation emerges, the large-emblem configuration documented as FG-057 should continue to be regarded as the regulation standard, while FG-058 represents a technically interesting deviation from that model.
